Conversations with Strangers @ Stephanie Chefas Projects
On July 8th, Stephanie Chefas Projects will unveil CONVERSATIONS WITH STRANGERS, a duo exhibit featuring the work of Adrian Landon Brooks and Caleb Hahne. Two distinctly stylized artists hailing from the West, Brooks and Hahne take a bold modern approach toward traditional painting. This exhibition will find both artists continuing to explore narratives of the human connection.
Adrian Landon Brooks' latest body of work presents universal themes of love, loss, and redemption placed within unique surreal worlds that transcend race or creed. Influenced by the purity of Folk Art, Brooks strips illustrations to their minimalist core and uses found materials such as wood, metal, and old photographs as repurposed canvases to instill an underlying sense of history for each piece.
Exploring the conversation between perceiver and perceived, Caleb Hahne's latest work reflects on the fleeting moments of intimacy with oneself and others. Hahne remixes convention by first appropriating images found on the internet. He then expands his technique by reducing information and creating a surrogate figure for the viewer to interact with. These ambiguous silhouettes function as empty vessels in which one can place himself or herself within to experience moments of intimacy or lack thereof. The absence of identity portrays an unfinished picture or blurred memory for the viewer to complete for themselves.
Conversations with Strangers opens Friday, July 8th at Stephanie Chefas Projects, 305 SE 3rd Avenue, Portland, OR 97214, www.stephaniechefas.com
