Joel Daniel Phillips 'Belongings' @ Hashimoto Contemporary
Earlier this month, Joel Daniel Phillips debuted a new collection of work at Hashimoto Contemporary entitled 'Belongings'. For his second solo with the gallery, Phillips explores the current social fabric of San Francisco through meticulous drawings of individuals from his neighborhood who often go ignored. Each figure is paired with a defining possession, such as a motorcycle helmet, crutch, leather jacket, or tent, that plays as an extension of his or her character.
Phillips further states, "The drawings are a visual record of my striving to recognize unknown and unnoticed individuals through the tip of my pencil... I am fascinated by the intricacies and commonalities that we share as humans, and search for moments when our projected senses of self are transparent, allowing deeper, more truthful emotions to become visible."
