Greg Craola Simkins takes us 'Beyond Shadows' @ KP Projects // MKG

Greg 'Craola' Simkins' newest (and largest!) body of work, entitled 'Beyond Shadows', is a visual testament to his journey to becoming a purveyor of surrealism in today's contemporary art scene. This show represents a climactic point in Simkins' career, as he derives inspiration from every influential aspect in his development as a painter-graffiti, illustration, and formal painting practice.  The variety of contrasting styles harmoniously inhabit each of Simkins' works and add layers after layers of detail and depth.

Craola is known for creating narratives infused with charismatic characters and wonder-filled worlds, so 'Beyond Shadows' does not disappoint. On Saturday May 21st, his loyal supporters gathered at KP Projects//MKG for the show's opening. As always, his popularity among a wide range of art enthusiasts was noticeable by the line leading up to the gallery's doors.

Vibrantly colored birds, charmingly dressed animals, and children with the gleam of endless imagination in their eyes, are among the protagonists that live within Craola's paintings. He even brings to life hybrid creatures, such as a tattooed sailor lemon-octopus and an incredibly detailed large-scale strawberry-octopus. Craola's latest animated creation, Stab E. Mack, also makes his debut in this body of work. Concurrently on view upstairs at LAUNCH Gallery, and contrasting to his figurative works, are his 'Drip Scripts' paintings. The various pieces are comprised of thick layers of paint built up to create waves of texture with dripped lettering, unveiling haunting messages as though being spoken to from beyond.

Simkins' new solo show captures his ongoing boundless imagination. He invites us to encounter the wondrous unknown that lies past the shadows, the unknown that we may not expect but should be ready to venture. Make sure to check out "Beyond Shadows" in person. Until then, take a look at a few of our opening night pictures.

Greg 'Craola' Simkins "Beyond Shadows" is on view through June 18th at KP Projects/ MKG, 170 S. La Brea, Los Angeles, CA 90036, www.mkgallery.com
