Mourning Wood in Liminal Dawn by Christian Rex van Minnen
Currently on view at Richard Heller Gallery is Christian Rex van Minnen’s, Mourning Wood in Liminal Dawn. The play on words references to the artist’s transitional mindset leading him into the unknown. This body of work reveals an excitement for the uncertainty that comes with new endeavors.
His disfigured characters - seemingly in transition themselves, morphing right in front of the viewer’s eyes - are a gateway into the discomfort aroused by change. van Minnen is no stranger to creating visually uncomfortable images on canvas. Yet these detailed portraits rendered in a painterly style go beyond that, exposing a depth that is much more relatable than repelling.
Mourning Wood in Liminal Dawn is on view until December 23rd. If you’re in the LA area, stop by the gallery and let these works speak to you.
