Sage Vaughn has returned to Lazarides Rathbone with a new body of work entitled “Nobody’s Home”. As a staple of his work, Vaughn creates interconnecting environments using birds and butterflies as symbols to enhance lifeless domestic scenery. These vibrantly-colored creatures bring life to muted surroundings, implying that the inhabitants themselves must also lack ‘color’ in their lives. What may appear desirable in home aesthetic has turned into a monotonous lifestyle guided by ignorance that obstructs many ways to escape the dreadful everyday routine. The lively fluttering of butterflies and birds perching in the foreground, lead us into the contrasting empty lives that Vaughn’s characters are caged into. Fortunately, the birds and butterflies used throughout his pieces, are a reminder of the ability to expand our horizons and break free from society’s barriers; they represent hope that is often overlooked and rarely valued. Vaughn’s juxtaposition between people and birds, or butterflies, exposes the underlying truth that “not being home”, that is, the absence of mind, can cause us to miss moments of absolute beauty. Whether it’s nature or a spontaneous opportunity, Vaughn’s collection brings attention to the small things in life that usually display the most vivacity.
