Currently at Library Street Collective, is Kelsey Brookes' new body of work entitled "Sleep: The Science and the Mystery". In his new works, Brookes explores abstraction through voluminous intricate patterns. The kaleidoscopic formations pulsate with movement and intense color pairings. His strokes of paint swirl freely, as though floating on water and dissipating without any boundary. As the artist's first solo in Detroit, "Sleep: The Science and the Mystery" encapsulates a scientific take on a profoundly mysterious necessity. Brookes' concept pulls us into a state of trance, deep relaxation, and quiet thought. The effects of getting lost in his paintings resemble the effects of how sleep can mentally transport us into moments filled with contemplation. Many of his pieces parallel the structures of mandalas, with elaborate designs and symbolism hinting at a larger than life representation.
